Powell reaches 50 games but still needs results

Huddersfield Town boss Chris Powell has told the Huddersfield Examiner that he will always be under pressure to pick up results. A section of fans had recently become disgruntled after a slow start to the season and felt Powell should lose his job.

Nevertheless 46-year-old Powell has now reached 50 games in charge of The Terriers and capped that off with a fine 2-1 away victory against former club Charlton Athletic. Whilst he acknowledged he never feared for his job, the one-cap England defender understands he is in a results business,

“Managers always need wins, and when you don’t get them, pressure builds. I understand how fans react and why.

This is a start, but we have to keep pushing forward, and I want back-to-back wins.”

Picking up three points at The Valley during the week propelled Huddersfield out of the relegation zone in the Championship. Powell has recently seen key players depart the John Smith’s Stadium and the new signings and now starting to show signs of bedding into their way of playing. Powell however never lost faith in his group of players,

“It’s been a tough period, because we have lost three major players (Jacob Butterfield, Alex Smithies and Conor Coady) and brought in a number of new faces.

They have to get to know one another and the players already here, and it takes time which you haven’t really got.

As leader of the group, you have to keep calm and keep your head and I knew we had something to work with, because we had been close to a win without being able to get one.”

Powell will be hoping to achieve back-to-back victories and collect their first home league win of the season when they entertain Bolton Wanderers on Saturday. Neil Lennon’s side are currently the lowest scorers in the Championship with three goals, with Huddersfield on five goals being the second least. Under 1.5 goals can be backed at 11/5 and the full betting market surrounding this fixture can be accessed by clicking here.
