Wigan chairman ‘probably regrets’ setting high target

Wigan Athletic manager Gary Caldwell has said that chairman David Sharpe “probably regrets” setting a target of sealing 100 league points this season, according to BBC Sport.

Sharpe admitted in pre-season that he wanted to ‘smash’ League One and set his side a target of sealing a triple figure amount of points. The Latics have started slowly, securing just 10 points in their first seven games, which means they sit in 10th place in the table.

Speaking with BBC Radio Manchester, BBC Sport quotes Caldwell as saying “it’s something that he said publicly, he probably regrets it now. He’s enthusiastic, he wants to do that for the club and for the supporters and so do I.

“Whether we smash the division, we’ve obviously found it’s going to be very difficult but we believe that success is going to come to this club soon.

“The word he used might not have been great at the time but I still believe, and he still believes, that we’re very capable of winning this league.”

Wigan’s next fixture is against Fleetwood Town at the DW Stadium on Saturday.
