Blades ‘have to deal with teams coming in with a game-plan’ says Edgar

Sheffield United defender David Edgar believes his side have to work out how to break down various teams game-plans and stop teams ‘shutting up shop’ when they take the lead, the Yorkshire Post reports.

Bury ran out 3-1 winners at Bramall Lane on Saturday. Goals from Tom Pope, Joe Riley and Leon Clarke sentenced the Blades to their second defeat of the season. A first half resilient performance from the visitors frustrated United and left them wondering how to break down the defence.

Bury executed their game-plan perfectly, frustrating the opposition’s forwards before looking for chances on the counter attack to score and take the lead, which they did on two occasions.

Saturday’s visitors will not be the only ones to try this style of play this season, and Edgar believes that United have to look at how they can stop teams from playing a similar style of football to Bury.

Speaking to the Yorkshire Post, Edgar said that “we have to deal with teams coming in with a game-plan. We have to work out how to break them down.

“There are going to be lots of different plans that people use against us. We’ll figure it out as we go along but, hopefully, sooner rather than later because we don’t want any more results like that at home. Definitely not.

“We felt comfortable in the first half. We created a few chances and should have stuck some of them away.”

Edgar goes onto highlight his frustration with the result by saying “when we got back to 1-1, we got hit by a sucker-punch although it was a great strike by their lad to be fair. We went gung-ho then and conceded a third.”

“It’s tough to take but we’ve got to dust ourselves off and get ready to go again. Every game is massive and the next team here will probably come and look to do something similar.

“Definitely, we are going to have to get used to it, especially at home. The key is getting that first goal and then looking to be comfortable.”

The victory took Bury up to 9th place in the Sky Bet League One. Sheffield United drop down to 5th after four wins and two losses in their first six league matches.
