Frecklington replaces Halford as Rotherham captain

Lee Frecklington has taken over from Greg Halford as the captain of Rotherham United. Manager Steve Evans confirmed to the clubs official website that he believes this change will benefit the team in the long-term.

Frecklington, who turned 30 today, has been with the club since October 2012, before turning him loan spell from Peterborough United into a permanent move in January 2013. The former Lincoln City Centre of Excellent graduate is closing in on 100 appearances for the New York Stadium club and Evans felt it was the right decision for both Frecklington and Halford,

“I formally offered the club captaincy to Lee Frecklington, which he has accepted. I have had many conversations with Greg Halford about the captaincy, and I felt that if we freed him from the extra burden of responsibility then he would have more time to work on his individual game, which would in turn benefit all parties. Greg has accepted the decision like a professional, and knows that his experience is still a valued asset to this squad.”

Evans also acknowledged that he made a mistake in handing former Nottingham Forest player Halford the captaincy at the beginning of the season, but still believes that making the change now was the right call to make,

“With the benefit of hindsight I have to accept I made the wrong decision with the captaincy at the start of the season, but I firmly believe that the changes we have made today will benefit players individually and the squad as a whole.”

Frecklington is currently Rotherham’s longest-serving player and a huge fan favourite with the Millers faithful. He will lead out the team for the first team on Saturday when he and his squad make the trip to South-East London to take on Charlton Athletic.
