Crystal Palace defender in talks with Wigan

Crystal Palace defender Paddy McCarthy is in talks to join League 1 side Wigan Athletic, according to a report.

McCarthy was part of a group previously reported as set to be sold by Palace as they looked to cut the money being spent on wages after lots of summer signings.

The defender, 32, arrived at the club from Charlton Athletic in 2008 and has made 134 appearances, scoring 6 goals.  He has been troubled by injuries for much of his time with Palace but was still named captain in 2011.

More recently, McCarthy has had loan spells with Sheffield United and Bolton Wanderers, both fairly successful.

However now the defender seems set to leave the Premier League club permanently as he is reportedly in talks with Wigan.  The Latics were relegated from the Championship last season and will be looking to bounce back at the first attempt.

However they have made a fairly average start to the season and currently sit in 9th place.
