Rotherham’s Evans strongly linked to dream Posh job

Rotherham United manager Steve Evans has today emerged as the new favourite to take over at League One side Peterborough United. Yesterday former Stevenage boss Graham Westley was touted as the most likely replacement for Dave Robertson, but a flurry of money has come for the Scot.

52-year-old Evans said as recently as yesterday to the BBC that he doesn’t fear getting the sack at New York Stadium and Millers chairman Tony Stewart says he could have the manager’s job for ‘as long as I want to be’,

“I’m not frightened of the sack, that’s the last thing I’m frightened of.

I work with my chairman every day. After the Fulham match he said that I would be the manager of Rotherham United for as long as I want to be as long as I turn up with the same determination.”

Evans has a house in Wansford, a village just outside of Peterborough and has been linked with the job at London Road in the past, during his time at Crawley Town and earlier this summer before Robertson was given the job on a full time basis by owner Darragh MacAnthony. Speaking in an interview with TalkSPORT back in April, Evans admitted his affection for the club,

“I’ve got a great affinity with Peterborough, I’ve lived there for 20 years and it’s no secret that my in-laws and all my relatives around there are big Peterborough United supporters, and I’ve got great respect for Darragh MacAnthony and (director of football) Barry Fry.

At some stage in my career in the future I would love to manage the Posh, I’m not going to tell anyone lies.”

The Peterborough Telegraph yesterday ran a piece covering the top 10 managers linked with the job, based on their prices in the betting. Their verdict was to approach Evans, insisting he’d be ‘ruthless and successful’.

Whilst Evans is a manager which is described as not being ‘everyone’s cup of tea’, there can be no doubting his managerial record, in a career which has seen him win titles and promotions in both non-league and the Football League. With Rotherham sitting bottom of the Championship, maybe Evans feels the time is right to make the move which he admitted he has always wanted to make at some point in his career.
