Bolton sign experienced goalkeeper Rachubka

Bolton Wanderers have today confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Paul Rachubka on a one-year deal. The club’s official website confirmed the news earlier today and is involved in the squad for today’s friendly against Motherwell.

The 34-year-old has bags of experience to his name, most recently during a spell in League One with Crewe Alexandra last season. With two young goalkeepers in the form of Ben Amos and Ross Fitzsimons currently at the Macron Stadium, boss Neil Lennon clearly wants an experienced shot stopper in his squad as well.

The former Manchester United youngster could provide The Trotters will some kind of good fortune, as the keeper has earned promotion via the play-off’s on three separate occasions throughout his career. He has also international experience with England at Under-16, Under-18 and Under-20 levels.

Rachubka makes his first return to the Championship since the 2011/12 season when he had a brief spell at Elland Road with Leeds United. He has played in well over 300 games throughout his career, which started in 2000 when appearing for the Old Trafford side in the FIFA Club World Championship, a Premier League game against Leicester City, as well as a cup tie against Watford. He earned clean sheets in all three of these games.

It remains to be seen if Rachubka comes into the side under Lennon, with it being more likely that he has a bigger impact on the training ground, potentially as some kind of mentor to the other goalkeepers at the club. Today, he was on the bench for Keith Lasley’s testimonial at Motherwell and will be available for league action in next weekend’s game with Wolverhampton Wanderers.
