Player of the Month winners: August

After the opening month of the season we have seen upsets, routs and plenty of quality football across the Football League. This week saw the first Player of the Month nominations take place and the winners were announced on Friday. We detail why the winners were selected for their respective divisions.

The Championship

Kazenga LuaLua – Brighton & Hove Albion

LuaLua has spent long periods of his time at Brighton as an impact player used sparingly from the bench. Manager Chris Hughton has renewed faith in the playmaker and has been rewarded with some fantastic performances. He already has three goals to his name from the opening month of the season, which include the winning strikes against both Nottingham Forest and Blackburn Rovers to help Brighton sit top of the table come the end of August.

After being given his award LuaLua told the Football League’s official website:

“It was very special just to be nominated for the award and to win is a very special moment for me, but the most important thing is that the team has started the season very well.

“I did work a lot in the summer to make sure I came into pre-season in good shape which has paid off so far, but I just want to keep going.

“It’s about making sure you start the season well and it helps when you are in the starting XI for each game because your confidence gets better every time you play.”

League One

Adam Armstrong – Coventry City

For any 18-year-old to come in on loan and jump straight into the starting line up they have to be a real talent. Armstrong who is at Coventry from Newcastle has fired five goals in as many games for the Sky Blues. He has shown the ability to score a variety of goals including a classy 30 yard chip over the keeper against Millwall. Armstrong’s goals have helped Coventry to claim ten points from their opening five games of the season.

Speaking while away on England Under 19 duty Armstrong told the Football League:

“It’s a great honour to win the award and totally unexpected. I’m always confident I can get goals but I never thought I’d get off to the start I have done at Coventry.

“Everyone from the manager and his staff, to the players and all the fans, have made me feel so welcome at the club. This award is for all of them really. Hopefully it won’t be the only success we can achieve together this season.”

League Two

Dean Cox – Leyton Orient

Leyton Orient, alongside Manchester City, are the only club to still have a 100% record in English league football and the main man behind it all has been Dean Cox. In his free role at the top of the diamond he has thrived and caused a constant headache for opposition defences. He already has five assists to his name and got on the scoresheet himself with a corking free-kick against Dagenham Redbridge.

Leyton Orient boss Ian Hendon told the Football League website that he is delighted for Cox:

“I am really pleased that Dean has picked up this award. He plays a vital role in our team with his goals and the chances he has created for his team-mates.

“He has produced some fine performances throughout the month and it is great for both the club and the team to have won both awards for the month.”
