Rowett confident that Gray will remain at Birmingham

Birmingham City boss Gary Rowett is ‘not overly concerned’ about the latest talk surrounding the future of in-demand attacker Demarai Gray. Speaking to the Birmingham Mail today, Rowett says no club, including Leicester City, have yet agreed a fee or come close to doing so.

19-year-old Gray is once again involved in constant rumours of potentially leaving St Andrews. The Birmingham Mail believes that Gray has a release clause on his contract in the region of £4.7million. However even if a club matches that figure, there are still many other factors regarding any potential deal. The biggest being what Gray himself would like to do, however Rowett believes he is more than happy to remain at the club,

“The first minute Dimmy set foot on a pitch with Birmingham City there was always going to be speculation because he is a real talent. We know that speculation is going to get hotter and hotter as the transfer window opens. We have got four or five days and it’s impossible to predict everything that’s going to happen.

But, at the moment – there has obviously been lots of interest- Demarai has always said the same to me. He’s happy here, he signed a new contract in the summer, he’s enjoying his football.

I don’t think anyone can say indefinitely that he is never going to move on – but at the moment that’s the conversations I’ve had with him.

We will see what happens over the next four or five days but I am not overly concerned.”

One club who has expressed a serious interest in the talented youngster is Premier League side Leicester City. The Leicester Mercury reported that The Foxes have met the release clause but the same source had revealed earlier in the week how any potential transfer would be complicated.

Tomorrow, Gray will be in the squad as he and the rest of his Birmingham City teammates make the trip to MK Dons. Former Burton Albion manager Rowett insists that although Gray isn’t an ‘automatic selection yet’, assuming he trains well then he will be in the side for their first ever trip to Stadium mk.
