Leeds United bid £3 million for Watford forward

Leeds United have reportedly bid £3 million for Watford forward Fernando Forestieri, according to the Sun journalist Alan Nixon.

The 25-year-old has attracted a lot of interest from a number of Championship clubs who were interested in securing the player on-loan, following Watford’s promotion to the Premier League.

Leeds and Sheffield Wednesday were two clubs who held major interest in the player, and Leeds looked to be out of the race after owner Massimo Cellino said the player would cost the club “really too much”.

The former Udinese forward has failed to make the squad for either of Watford’s two opening Premier League games. Last season he made 24 appearances in the Championship, scoring five goals and assisting six as Watford stormed to promotion.

Watford’s Sporting Director, Nicola Salerno, previously worked under Leeds owner Massimo Cellino last season and played a part in a number of incoming transfers to the club, including the signing of Sol Bamba this summer. It is believed that Salerno has been a part of talks between the two clubs for the player.

Leeds had previously aimed to take Forestieri on a season-long loan, but Watford were reluctant to agree to this and would prefer a sale of the player.

The Whites are looking to strengthen their forward line this transfer window and have come close to signing Raphael Martinho from Catania and Brandon Barker from Manchester City, as well as approaching Anthony Limbombe from Dutch side NEC Nijmegen. They could not secure the signatures of these players for various reasons.
