Aaron McLean signs for Martin Allen’s Barnet

Barnet have today announced on their official website the signing of experienced striker Aaron McLean on a short-term contract. 32-year-old McLean will be available for Saturday’s trip to Bristol Rovers.

McLean has been without a club since being released from Bradford City over the summer. The striker has struggled for form over the past few seasons, with injury problems certainly having a major effect. However McLean is now focused on the future and is delighted to now be playing his football at The Hive, back in London,

“I’m buzzing to have joined Barnet and I just can’t wait to get started. I’m a London lad, so being back in London is brilliant for me.”

McLean, who started his career at Leyton Orient, also expressed his pleasure at now being able to play his football under manager Martin Allen, who was a big influence on him signing,

“I know a few of the players here already, and then there’s the chance to come and work with Martin Allen. He’s different to a lot of managers. I look at the way he manages and I quite admire him.”

Everyone is the footballing world will associate McLean as being a strong, powerful, pacey striker who above all knows where the back of the net is. However he was asked to describe himself to the Barnet supporters,

“I like to work hard, and I try to put myself about in games. I like to score goals as well. First and foremost I want to come in and put a shift in for the team. Hopefully at the end of it I’ll get the goals to get us up the league.”

McLean will now be looking to rediscover some of his past form, which saw him win the League Two Golden Boot in the 2007/08 season with Peterborough United on route to promotion into League One. He’ll be hoping to have a similar effect on Barnet, where he’ll now challenge with the likes of John Akinde, Kevin Lisbie, Shaun Batt, Michael Gash and Ben Tomlinson for one of the strikers positions.
