Ipswich Town Transfer News: Latest Rumours From Portman Road

It’s safe to say that Portman Road has been far from a hive of transfer activity over the last few summers. Ipswich Town manager Mick McCarthy has been on a tight budget since his arrival in Suffolk, with free transfers and loans making up the majority of his new additions.

This time around, however, it’s different. The departure of defender Tyrone Mings to Bournemouth for £8 million has given McCarthy and co. the license to spend; and even though we’re yet to see a marquee signing don the blue shirt, it could well only be a matter of time.

Here’s a look at the latest transfer rumours from Portman Road, as Ipswich look to add the final few pieces to their talented puzzle.

Jordan McGhee

The Jordan McGhee saga has been dragging on and on throughout the summer, and it seems that a resolution is still a long way away.

According to the East Anglian Daily Times, Town recently had a £500,000 bid for the 19-year-old turned down by Hearts, despite that being the club’s original asking price.

Ipswich kicked off the bidding by putting a £100,000 offer on the table, but the Scottish club have constantly been moving the goalposts in the hope of pocketing a bit more cash.

Hearts manager Robbie Neilson echoed as much in a recent interview with Sky Sports, as he said that he’s not about to let McGhee go cheap:

“He’s a big player here, he’s a Scotland Under-21 international and captain. If he is going to go, it’s going to be for a lot of money. Every player has a price. I don’t want to sell him but if someone comes in with an acceptable value then we will look at it.”

The ball is now very much in McCarthy and managing director Ian Milne’s court, although it wouldn’t be surprising to see their quest to land a versatile defender shift away from the Scottish capital.
