Oldham Athletic’s Cassidy facing lengthy lay-off

Oldham Athletic striker Jake Cassidy is facing three months on the sidelines following an injury sustained on Saturday in the game against Fleetwood Town. The incident occurred early in the first half of Saturday’s 1-0 win over Fleetwood Town in what was a fairly innocuous challenge and lead to the player having to be substituted for the impressive Rhys Turner.

Immediately after the game, Cassidy tweeted ‘Absolutely gutted!’ and news coming out of the club last night confirmed the striker has suffered ligament damage and a fracture to his lower leg, ruling him out for a minimum of 12 weeks.

The forward, signed from Wolves in the summer, has started his time with Latics well, impressing in games against Walsall and Middlesbrough and the news comes as a major disappointment to fans. Leading the line in a fashion that his 6′ 2″ frame would suggest, Cassidy has been a focal point in Latics’ attack and key to Darren Kelly’s tactics. Despite not scoring thus far, the striker has earned plaudits among the Oldham faithful and has arguably been their best player of the season so far.

The striker will be a big loss to Latics and could force manager Darren Kelly to revert to a plan B, with a lack of a replacement target man waiting in the wings. Certainly Rhys Turner is impressive in the air for a man of his size, however Oldham struggled to keep the ball after Cassidy was forced off on Saturday primarily due to the lack of a physical presence up front.

Support messages have flooded in on Twitter and only time will tell how well Latics cope with the loss, however the news is not something the Oldham fans will relish after an otherwise positive start to the campaign.
