Why West Brom’s reported Gray bid is insulting

West Brom were yesterday linked with a move for Birmingham wing wizard Demarai Gray in The Sun – but the amount quoted was ridiculous.

The Sun claim that Blues put in a release clause of £4m, which would border on negligent, given they turned down £5m BEFORE he signed a new three-year contract.

In a time of crazily inflated transfer fees, where £15m for Charlie Austin is a reasonable price, or Wilfried Zaha cost £10m, £4m for Gray is insulting, disgusting and not even close to what he should go for.

Zaha spent three years at Palace, playing 110 times, the first time around. He bagged 12 in 110, whereas Gray already has 7 in 50. Whilst Zaha was arguably the hottest property in England at the time, however, Gray is slightly less sought-after.

Birmingham boss Gary Rowett should not listen to bids under £8m, and even £8m seems a bargain given the crazy prices that young English talent goes for. Patrick Roberts, who played just 19 times for Fulham without scoring, went for £10-11m in a similar position. £12m for Gray does not seem ridiculous – and it seems a much fairer price than £4m.
