Charlton close to signing ex-Liverpool goalkeeper

South London Today reports that Charlton Athletic are set to sign former Liverpool goalkeeper Brad Jones. The Australian has been training with the club with the view of earning a contract and appears to have done enough to warrant a deal.

The 33-year-old is expected to put pen to paper on a deal set to last for the remainder of the season. It is believed Addicks boss Guy Luzon is seeking cover for first choice Stephen Henderson, who has only recently recovered from surgery on his shoulder.

Jones has been linked with a number of clubs over the summer since his release from Liverpool, where he made 27 appearances. Most recently Bristol City was mentioned but Derby County was touted as a possible destination for him as well. However the Derby Telegraph also believes an arrangement that will see Jones line up at The Valley shortly will be announced.

The goalkeeper has been lengthy periods of his career acting as understudy. During a nine year spell at Middlesbrough, he had six loan spells away from the club and was frequently second fiddle behind the consistent Mark Schwarzer. He’ll be hoping to enjoy a regular run of games during the period when Henderson is given time to fully recover from shoulder surgery.

He could be in contention for a place in the squad for tomorrow’s trip to Derby, a place where Jones enjoyed a loan spell last season. However, Tuesday nights visit to Nottingham Forest could be a more realistic target for him to be involved.
