Week 2 – JB’s Championship Predictions

Heading into week 2 of the Championship season there is some big games attracting interest. After a week where nearly half of The Championship teams losing mid week in The Capital One Cup it will be interesting to see if clubs have gained momentum from a mid week cup win.

Burnley vs Birmingham
Having been relegated from The Premier League Burnley are still looking for their first competitive win of the season. Having drawn their first game and losing to Port Vale mid week Sean Dyche’s men will be desperate for a win for the Turf Moor faithful. Birmingham City however have made a 100% start to their season, having beaten Reading 2-1 last week and an away win against Bristol Rovers in the cup means that they are full of confidence heading North on Saturday.
Prediction- 1-1

Bristol City vs Brentford
The Championship newcomers have made a rocky start to the new season, having lost their first game 2-0 to Sheffield Wednesday, and also losing 3-1 to Luton mid week. Both away games however, with the Ashton Gate  crowd behind their team I think it will be difficult to beat Bristol City at home. Brentford made a brilliant comeback against Ipswich last week scoring twice in quick succession. However a 4-0 defeat at home to League 2 Oxford will have dented the confidence of Brentford.
Prediction- 2-1

Derby vs Charlton
Paul Clement will not be happy with his start to his Derby career, having drawn 0-0 away at Bolton and a 2-1 defeat against Portsmouth in the cup. Derby have debatably the best squad in the league and should have no problem putting out a competitive team this weekend, however I worry if Clement can take the step from assistant to manager, Will Hughes is also a big loss for the club. Charlton started with 2 wins, against relegated QPR and Dagenham and Redbridge. They will be looking to continue this good form at Pride Park.
Prediction- 1-1

Fulham vs Brighton
This match has draw written all over it, both are weak defensively and stronger in attack. Fulham drew their first game at home to Cardiff and Brighton squeezed past Forest. Both had 1-0 wins against lower league opposition mid week so I expect it to be a scrappy game but to end in a draw.
Prediction- 1-1

Huddersfield vs Blackburn
Town have lost both their competitive games this season having been beaten by Hull and Notts County. They’re going to struggle this season, with not having any real star talent. Blackburn had a good season last year but have started this season slowly. A 2-1 defeat against Wolves (My pick for the title) and getting beaten by Shrewsbury by the same score line its looking as if Blackburn may be missing their main man Rudy Gestede.
Prediction- 0-0
