Hopes were high that Leeds United would travel the short distance into South Yorkshire, soundly beat Doncaster Rovers at their Keepmoat Stadium, travel back up to Leeds and still have time to smoke a kipper ready for supper. Funny how hope doesn’t quite meet reality, as it was hope didn’t get on the team bus this time and sat at home wringing its hands in glee. Despite impressing in the opening of the game and handing Doncaster a lesson and taking a lead through Lewis Cook, a rash tackle allowed Doncaster an equaliser from the penalty spot. Lewis Cook was then hero to villain with a needless off-the-floor challenge that ended with a straight red card. Leeds played 82 or so minutes reduced to 10 men and eventually went out after losing the penalty shoot out 4-2.
However, just how did Twitter react to the defeat and how did the Twitterati respond?
There is the obligatory stoicism and brave-face-putting-on from some,
Not down heartened about tonight, positive from bellusci and Antenucci #lufc

whilst for others it is cutting sarcasm as the order of the day,

After Sam Byram’s ‘skyed’ penalty in the shootout, one wit says,
Fully expect Sam Byram and Chris Wood to appear in a Pizza Hut advert some time soon. #lufc

Whilst another raconteur responds to news that Wootton was playing holding midfield and Wood’s ‘placed’ penalty with,
Rösler says playing Wootton there was 'creative' & Wood says he was too 'precise'. The English language is taking a battering tonight. #lufc

Humor in the face of defeat continues with,

Whilst some are very forthright and direct with their language when describing the precision Chris Wood said he took his penalty with,
Precise? The fuck was he aiming at? Wetherby? #lufc

And I leave you with this erudite analogy,

It was a disappointing loss and not matter how much gloss Leeds fans put on it, it was a defeat by a lower league team who were allowed to boss the game far too much. Saying that, Leeds did look more organised than they did in defeat to Bradford City last season but the best thing to come out of the game is definitely the Twitter reaction from Leeds United fans. At least we can now concentrate on the league campaign.
