Brighton to sign German defender for £1.4m

Brighton are set to sign 29-year-old German defender Uwe Hunemeier, according to the Argus.

Hunemeier, who plays at centre back, is the captain of relegated German side Paderborn and the reports suggest a fee in the excess of £1.4m has been agreed between the two clubs.

There have been continuing reports that Brighton centre-half Lewis Dunk could be a leaving the club, with Fulham having a number of bids rejected, and this signing will only muddy the waters even more.

According to the Brighton based newspaper, Hunemeier has been brought in to play alongside Dunk, not as his replacement.

Hunemeier came through the youth ranks at Borussia Dortmund and featured over 150 times for Dortmund’s second team.

He made just five appearances for the first team, joining Energie Cottbus in 2010. The defender played their for three years  before Paderborn in 2013.

In his first season at the club he helped them gain promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time in their history, however they were relegated last season, finishing bottom of the division four points adrift from safety.

Brighton of course enjoyed an opening fixture win over Nottingham Forest at the Amex and are in League Cup action on Tuesday evening at Southend.
