League Two, League Two Team of the Week

League Two Team of the Week

League Two kicked off this weekend, with Cambridge, Portsmouth and Wycombe pulling off 3-0 victories leaving them top of the pile. This is League Two Team of the Week.

Sam Beasant – The Cambridge goalkeeper made a vital penalty save at 2-0 that could have changed the game. He kept a clean sheet for the rest of the game too, as Cambridge romped to a 3-0 victory.

Anthony Stewart – Back to Wycombe for his second debut, Stewart headed in the first of three Wycombe goals, as they also kept a clean sheet. His afternoon was far better than Stephane Zubar’s, as he chipped his own keeper Scott Flinders to make it 3-0.

Malvind Benning – A beautiful free-kick wasn’t enough to win the game for Mansfield, but given that the defender had only scored two career goals until now, it was a very special goal and earned him a spot on the Team of the Week.

John Joe O’Toole – O’Toole scored the only goal of the game for Northampton, ruining Bristol Rovers first weekend back in the league, but getting his side off to a great start. His defensive work helped keep Rovers to just two shots on target, too.

Graham Carey – A debut goal is always nice, and Carey grabbed his first Plymouth goal in a 2-0 victory over AFC Wimbledon. Carey is a traditional winger and a very talented one, and looks like he could be a coup for Plymouth.

Curtis Thompson – There was no fairytale start for Teddy Sheringham, as he saw his Stevenage side beaten by Notts County. Thompson was at the centre of that, as he put the finishing touches to a swift counter attack to put County in the lead in the first half.

Kyle Bennett – Probably the best performance in the league this weekend, Bennett smashed home two goals of the highest quality, after setting up Evans for the first. The first crashed in off the bar, the second a 25-yard screamer, as Portsmouth displayed their intentions with an impressive 3-0 victory over Dagenham and Redbridge.

Gareth Evans – Another Portsmouth player, Evans headed Bennett’s corner into the net to start Portsmouth’s scoring for the afternoon. Coincidentally, his first Fleetwood goal was also against Dag and Red, so Portsmouth will be hoping that he will be as useful for them as he was for Fleetwood.

Billy Paynter – Hartlepool look to be on a better path this year than last, as they narrowly avoided defeat. New boy Billy Paynter scored his first for the club before laying on strike partner Rakish Bingham for the second, as Hartlepool edged past Morecambe. Hartlepool will be hoping for a few more games like that from the striker.

Barry Corr – Corr’s brace put Cambridge firmly in the driving seat before Beasant’s penalty heroics, with two accomplished finishes. A perfect header and a calm finish when one on one made it a debut to remember for the former Southend striker.

Jay Simpson – Simpson turned a quiet game on it’s head with a nice turn and finish to put Orient ahead – a rare piece of quality in an otherwise dull game. McCallum fired home a second a minute later, but it was Simpson who really turned the game.
