Player Ratings- Leeds United 1-1 Burnley

So the season is underway and it was a battle of the roses at Elland Road, Yorkshire vs Lancashire. Live on Sky, Leeds and Burnley battled to get the three points but the game ended as a stalemate.

Leeds started the better team, creating early chances from Sol Bamba and Tom Heaton magnificently turning Stuart Dallas’ effort onto the bar. Burnley then grew into the game and had two strong penalty shouts. New signing Jelle Vossen crossed the ball in towards Lukas Jutkiewicz, who seemed to be dragged to the floor by Charlie Taylor. The second appeal came when Vossen again played Jutkiewicz towards goal. Jutkiewicz tried to make his way around Bellusci who seemed to handle the ball whilst his arms were up in the air, however the linesman and referee dismissed the appeals.

Between the two penalty appeals and the 83rd minute there was not much in the way of chances. However, when the 83rd minute came, Mirco Antenucci came up with an astonishing strike. The Leeds United striker took the ball down on the edge of the box and turned on the spot, avoided a challenge from Kightly, and curled a wonderful left-footed effort into the top corner, giving Tom Heaton no chance. With a goal so late you wouldn’t expect Burnley to come back. Burnley kept fighting and got their just deserved. After some tricky, quick footwork by George Boyd on the right wing, he tee’d up debutant Tendayi Darikwa, who produced a brilliant cross, met by the head of Sam Vokes, going away from goal who gave Sylvestri, in the Leeds goal, absolutely no chance.

Tom Heaton- 7.5

The England international didn’t have much too do within the game, but what he did what he needed to do. The stopper was named new Burnley captain before the game and definitely stepped up to the plate.

Tendayi Darikwa- 6.5

Burnley’s new right-back, signed as a back up to Matt Lowton, looked nervous on the ball within the first half. The 23 year-old grew into the game and got better and looked more comfortable as the game went on.

Michael Keane- 8

The 22 year-old looked solid and strong in his performance, always looked relaxed on the ball and never gave it away. Burnley’s Man of The Match.

Michael Duff- 7

At 37, you’d say Duff’s playing days are nearing the end of his career. He looked solid at the back and never looked like he was losing the pace of the game.

Ben Mee- 7

Ben Mee has grown into his role at left back and is getting better every game. The versatile defender worn a lot of headers and made a lot of crunching tackles.

Michael Kightly- 6

Kightly on his day is a very good, tricky winger but today was not his day. He looked weak on the ball and gave the ball away numerous times. A poor day for the Burnley winger.

David Jones- 6

Not the most creative midfielder in the world and that was shown today. Jones looked nervous, rusty and seemed to panic on the ball. It could be a long old season for the central midfielder.

Scott Arfield- 6.5

The winger-come-central midfielder, hasn’t grown well into the role Dyche gave him half way through last season. Known as a tricky wideman, Arfield didn’t impress or create anything throughout the game. He got his foot in when needed and put a couple of passes together.

George Boyd- 7

Boyd is well known for his non-stop work ethic. That was on show today. He didn’t stop running all game and helped set up the goal for Burnley.

Lukas Jutkiewicz- 6.5

Jutkiewicz didnt score all season last season. Despite impressing in pre-season Jutkiewicz looks rusty from the break. He put himself around and had a couple of great chances but couldn’t convert.

Jelle Vossen- 6

After making a big money move from Genk in Belgium, Vossen has a name to live up to. Maybe he felt nervous and wants to live up to his price tag and impress the fans.

Substitutes- Sam Vokes- 6.5

Vokes didn’t have much time to impress. He scored an incredible header which gave the ‘keeper no chance. Other than that he didn’t do a great deal but did what he needed.

Marvin Sordell- 5

An overrated striker that has struggled to make a name at Burnley. He came on today and didn’t seem to have a touch on the ball.

Matt Taylor- N/A

Only came on for 3 minutes and didn’t have time to make an impact.
