Port Vale sign ex Newcastle United keeper

Port Vale have signed ex Newcastle United goalkeeper Jak Alnwick on a short-term deal.

Alnwick, became a free agent in the summer following his release from Newcastle United and has joined Port Vale on a short-term contract, to cover for first team Goalkeeper Chris Neal who is out injured.

Former England youth international Alnwick, made 8 appearances last season in the Premier League for Newcastle, particularly impressing in the 2-1 victory over Chelsea.

He lost his place in Goal to regular number 1 Tim Krul after his return from injury and then spent the latter half of last season on loan at League 1 Bradford City.

Port Vale manager Rob Page told BBC Radio Stoke “Jak is a very talented player who has experience at the highest level with Newcastle United and he’s also had a taste of league one with Bradford, we are all very pleased to have him on board”.

Alnwick is expected to go straight into the first team for the eagerly anticipated first game of the season against local rivals Crewe Alexandra, after reserve team Goalkeeper Sam Johnson failed to impress in pre-season following Neal’s injury.
