Sol Bamba handed Leeds captaincy

Defender Sol Bamba has been named as Leeds United captain for the upcoming season after joining the club permanently this summer, as revealed by the club’s official Twitter feed.

The 30-year-old has captained the team throughout the pre-season campaign and is a popular figure around the club. Joining on-loan in January, Bamba went onto make 19 appearances where he found the net once in the away trip to Fulham.

The defender previously expressed his desire to keep the Leeds United captaincy, saying after the Hoffenheim friendly that “every game that I have played and been captain is an honour and a privilege, but the manager has got to decide and whatever it is I will take it.”

Speaking to Leeds United’s club website, Head Coach Uwe Rosler said “It’s natural to Sol. He’s been in England and he understands the English culture and mentality of the Championship.

“He’s also been in Italy and speaks several languages and can bridge the gap. He can unify the dressing room. That’s very important.

“It’s a long season and in the Championship you need mentality and morale. Not just over four weeks, but over 10 months in good times and bad times.

“He’s a very important person to achieve that.”
