Leeds United: is time up for Morison at Elland Road

The cult hero that was building up, the terrace favourite who spawned his own nickname, the man that fans called ‘The Shift’ is himself shifting on from Leeds United. It had been mooted all summer long that Steve Morison’s time at Leeds was about to come to an end and that he would be trading Elland Road for pastures new. That time seems likely to be now according to BBC Radio Leeds’ didicated Leeds United reporter, the much-respected Adam Pope who spilled the news in this Tweet (below)

The news of Steve ‘The Shift’ Morison departing Leeds United will neither come unexpected nor as a surprise, especially seeing as the Whites have signed Chris Wood to occupy the main striker role that Morison himself occupied in the 2015 run-in to the end of last season. His game time would have always been somewhat limited in the coming 2015/16 Championship campaign and, with this in mind, it is likely fairer that the club allow Morison to seek out new employers, well old employers in former club Millwall – a team who he has made 137 appearances for and scored 48 goals as well as providing 24 assists.

Phil Hay, writing in the Yorkshire Evening Post, said that the club have “parted company” with Steve Morison after “agreeing to sever the last year of his contract.” Hay also reports that removing the “serious financial burden” of Morison’s contract might also have played a factor in the club’s decision to reach a settlement with the player so that he could then move onto former club Millwall on a free transfer.

Whilst his time at Leeds United could hardly ever be described as a fruitful in terms of goals, what Leeds United fans will appreciate will be the effort that he put in for the club. Steve Morison really is one player who Leeds fans could rely on for putting in a ‘shift’.
