Bradford City: Anderson signs on as a Bantam – Twitter reacts

It only took less than a week, five days really, but Bradford City have finalised the signature of winger Paul Anderson. I wrote about Bradford’s interest in Anderson for The72 on July 27 and the Bantams formally announced his signature on their club website on August 1, Yorkshire Day. The former Liverpool and Hull City man was let go by Ipswich at the end of last season after really only playing a bit-part (1,927 minutes from a possible 4,140) in the Tractor Boys’ 2014/15 Championship campaign. However,  during that time he did score two goals and, more importantly, lay on seven goals assists with this passes.

When writing my original piece, I focused on a couple of important areas of his game: his ability to work chances for others and also his general defensive duties on the wing. A refresher on the first point, his chance creation. As well as creating seven goal assists for teammates, Paul Anderson also creates a lot of shooting opportunities for teammates (2.3 per typical 90 minutes) which, over the time he played for Ipswich in 2014/15, equated to a high 7.25% of all his passing attempts. When not laying on goals or shooting opportunities for teammates, defensively Anderson also can put a shift in. For Ipswich he had an average 2.1 tackles and 2 interceptions per typical 90 minutes of game time, again showing a good level of production that will translate well into League One.

Bradford City are, on their website, well within their rights to say, “the Bantams have pulled off a major transfer swoop by completing the signing of talented winger Paul Anderson.” In fact, it could very well be the one signing that Bradford City make this season which could have a massive effect.

Bradford City fans have every right to be this excited about Paul Anderson’s arrival and place such hope in just how good he is. Good, natural wingers are as rare as rocking horse droppings and in Paul Anderson, Bradford City might just have found that rare gem and on a free too. With his combination of defensive strength and consistency and both a high goal assist rate and shot assist rate for teammates, the Bantams could have a rare find on their hands.
