When news was first surfacing that Luton had former Brighton and Hove Albion striker Craig Mackail-Smith on trial with a view to a permanent signature, it is safe to say that fans of the Hatters in Bedfordshire and beyond were excited at potentially bringing in a class striker who has shown that he can cut it at a higher level. When I wrote, July 26, that Mackail-Smith was due to give his answer ‘on Monday’, I, along with others, were wrong as the Scot announced his permanent move to Luton on Saturday. OK, so everybody was out with their predictions but in gaining his signature, Luton fans can rest safely that they potentially have the man to fire them back to promotion dreams.
Quoted on the club’s official website, via a YouTube interview (below) the now fully-fit Mackail-Smith has assured Luton fans that there is only one thing on his mind…to simply score goals. Mackail-Smith, when asked what his goals were simply said,
“To score goals – I’ve missed it. I scored a few goals last season but no-where near as many as I wanted. That’s my job, I love doing it. I’ve come here to score as many goals as I can and help push this team to win the league.” Craig Mackail-Smith – club website; Aug 1, 2015
In the 8 minute video interview, Mackail-Smith opens up as to just what it is about the Hatters that convinced him to sign for Luton Town. As he put it,
“I feel this club has a fantastic chance to push through the leagues and I want to be a part of that. I want to enjoy my football again and I know that this club is going places. A fully-fit Mackail-Smith, will be a potent weapon come Luton’s League Two campaign and should provide the firepower to jettison the Hatters up to the top reaches of the table.
