Oldham Athletic today confirmed the signing of David Dunn on a one year deal.
The midfielder, realeased by Blackburn Rovers at the end of last season, adds a wealth of experience and skill to Latics’ squad and could prove to be a master stroke by rookie manager Darren Kelly.
Dunn will be well known to most football fans having played over 375 games; the majority of which in the Premier League. He impressed so much as a youngster that he earned an England call up in 2001 and made his debut in 2002, coming off the bench at half time to replace Steven Gerrard. However, Dunn’s career became ravaged by injuries and despite never having dropped below English football’s second tier previously, no more England caps have followed.
Indeed injury, or rather staying fit, will be key to Dunn’s success as a Latics player. Having only made 12 appearances for Blackburn Rovers in all competitions last season, question marks certainly exist over Oldham’s decision to take the midfielder on. However, Latics fans will be hoping that the comparatively slower tempo of League One football could aid Dunn in his quest to keep fit.
Should the 35 year old keep off the treatment table, Latics have a hell of a player on their hands and could be looking at one of the top midfields in the league. With Liam Kelly, Mike Jones, Carl Winchester and George Green as central midfield players, the task for Darren Kelly will now be keeping the squad together.
Oldham are one of the bookies’ favourites to struggle this year, however your money could well be placed elsewhere with signings like this.
