Sheffield Wednesday: Potential starting line-up

With only 10 days until Wednesday’s first league game against Bristol City, we are going to take a look at the potential eleven manager Carlos Carvalhal might start.

I’ve gone for a 4-1-3-1-1 because Carvalhal likes to have more midfielder’s and only play one up front.

The keeper is a no-brainer, I have gone with probably the best keeper I have ever seen pull on a Wednesday shirt, Keiren Westwood. I know most Wednesday fans will agree with me on that one.

The back four I have gone with features no new recruits just the usual back four we had last season that helped us to 17 clean sheets and with that, equalling a club record. Later on in the campaign I can see new signing Jack Hunt overshadowing Liam Palmer, but since he hasn’t featured much in pre-season Palmer should get the nod come a-week-on-Saturday. Glenn Loovens and Tom Lees have impressed in the pre-season games I’ve seen them play in. I think Lee Bullen may have a part to play in this by convincing Carvalhal that they are the ideal two to start. As much as I am not Claude Dielna’s biggest fan, we don’t really have any other left backs, Helan can play there but he isn’t as strong. Dielna should get the start.

The midfield features 5 players, 3 of them new recruits. We will start with the defensive midfielder, Jose Semedo. He has been ever present since joining from Charlton in the 2010/11 promotion campaign. We fans absolutely love Semedo, he never hides his love for the club and that rubs off on the pitch. He gives 110% ever single game. No wonder we Wednesday fans sing “He’s magic, you know. You’ll never get past Semedo.” He is an ideal starter for the Bristol City game and probably the strongest DM we have. The other midfielders are Marco Matias, Alex Lopez and Ross Wallace. These three have impressed me in pre-season and shown how classy they play in the midfield. For me, Alex Lopez is something Wednesday haven’t had for years. He sits in the middle of the back and sprays perfect balls through the middle and out wide, his footballing brain is magnificent. Marco Matias is a relatively unknown Portuguese winger who scored 17 goals in the top league of Portugal last season, only Cristiano Ronaldo scored more goals than him out of any professional Portuguese player last season. He has been great in pre-season and should surely get the nod over anyone for the first game. Most of you reading this will know who Ross Wallace is, he has the package. He can do most things with a football, especially his amazing free-kicks. Speaking of free-kicks our last midfielder is an attacking one, Lewis McGugan. He impressed on two loan spells last season and quickly became a fans favourite at the club scoring a few goals, some of the great free kicks. He has an eye for the goal and for a killer pass. He will be crucial for the Bristol City game and for the season.

Our striker is Atdhe Nuhiu. I know a lot of you will be wondering why start him? Carvalhal likes one up-front and he likes the man to be a strong target-man. Nuhiu fits the bill on all those. I personally hope we sign a striker so I don’t have to watch Atdhe struggle on his own up front. We have 10 days to sign a striker and we need to quick.
