Player Profile: Preston North End’s Greg Cunningham

Preston have clinched the signing of Greg Cunningham this week on a permanent basis from Bristol City.

He is the club’s fourth signing of the summer and to let all you PNE fans know what he’s like, we’ve decided to do a player profile on the new signing.

Basic Stats

Name: Greg Cunningham

Age: 24

Position: LB/LM

POB: Galway, Ireland

Previous clubs

Cunningham began by playing for a team called Mervue United, a team located in his hometown. He spent three years of his youth there before making the move to Manchester City in 2007.

In 2010, he made his first ever first-team appearance in a senior game for Man City, as they took on Scunthorpe in the FA Cup. He would go on to feature very little for the Citizens during his two-year stint there.

During his time at the Etihad, he was sent out on loan to Leicester, where he made 13 appearances. The defender then made the move to Nottingham Forest on loan, where he featured a further 27 times.

In 2012, Man City decided to move him on permanently and he signed for Bristol City. This was where he arguably played his best football. In his three years at the club, he played over 90 games and popped up with four goals.

As for international appearances, he has played for Republic Of Ireland’s Under-17 and Under-21 teams and he has made four appearances for the senior side since 2010.

Where can he play?

Cunningham is usually deployed as a left-back and that is where he seems to play his best football – it is his main position. However, he isn’t just limited to a defensive role: the 24-year old has also played in left-midfield and if Simon Grayson finds himself short in that area, Cunningham could certainly fill the gap.

As previously mentioned though, LB is his main position and it looks likely that he will play most of his football for Preston in that defensive role, especially with the current lack of full-backs in general at the club.
