Sheffield United: Potential starting line-up

As the season draws ever closer and teams start to make more and more signings, we take a look at Sheffield United’s potential starting line-up against Gillingham from their current crop of players.

Defenders

This back four has been chosen because of their work together. Only Neill Collins didn’t play in that back line last season but the experienced centre half should have no problem slotting in there as all four have played together on multiple occasions in pre-season. Full back Freeman scored an absolute belter against Premier League Newcastle in a recent pre-season friendly and always seem steady at the back. Jay McEveley has made 46 appearances for the Blades which all came last season in various competitions. Like Freeman, the 30 year old had a steady stint at centre half last season which did have some worrying moments. Bob Harris is also a rock steady full back. He also has no other competition for his place from a recognised full back.

Midfielders

A main midfield 3 with an attacking midfielder sitting just in front is the way we think is best for the Blades. Jamal Campbell-Ryce has had his doubters and still does to this day but he has the ability to run at defenders and cause trouble for the opposition. He joined from Notts County in July last year. Chris Basham spent the majority of last season at centre half but new boss Nigel Adkins seems to prefer the 27 year old in the middle of the park. He’s a string puller. Like Campbell-Ryce, Scotsman Jamie Murphy has the ability to cause trouble. His exploits down the wing can really make a difference for the Blades. Sometimes he doesn’t really turn up though. Finally, Che Adams in behind the strikers is something that could become fruitful. Adams is one of United’s biggest prospects and has had a bright pre-season as well as showing his ability towards the latter stage of last season. He could easily get 10 plus goals this season.

Strikers

Billy Sharp is a player who knows how to perform in League One. In 82 League One appearances, he’s scored 53 goals. However, previous employment by Sheffield United never really proved prolific scoring only 13 in 66. Saying this, under former boss Nigel Adkins, Sharp could once again find his scoring form and could hit between 20 and 30 goals this season if played regularly. Matt Done is the opposite of Sharp. Done is a striker who doesn’t give the defenders a moment’s piece and will always try and win the ball from the opposition. Done joined the Blades last season and actually finished with stats of scoring 8 in only 17 appearances. If he remains injury free, Done could prove a vital asset for a promotion chasing Sheffield United side.
