Leeds set to snap up Premier League defender

Leeds are interested in signing Mike Williamson from Newcastle.

The giant defender has played 150 times for the Tyneside club, but has reportedly been transfer listed as the club look to bring in new blood.

Chancel Mbemba is set to join Newcastle this week, which will pave the way for Williamson’s exit, with Leeds the favourite to sign him.

Despite his height, Williamson has only scored once for Newcastle, a tap in against Crystal Palace, which could cause concern – though he is not meant to score goals, a defender that size should be dominating in the air and grabbing the odd goal.

That said, he has been a mainstay in a Premier League defence, despite John Carver’s claims that he deliberately got himself sent off just this year.

Williamson would command a fee, and that is yet to be agreed, though Leeds are expected to pursue their interest in the coming weeks.
