Sheffield Wednesday vs Bristol City: Boycott Planned?

After Bristol City revealing ticket prices for their first game back in the Championship against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough, anger has been sparked from both sets of fans.

It is set to be a spectacle, Sheffield Wednesday beginning their new era under Thai billionaire Dejphon Chansiri and Portuguese manager Carlos Carvalhal and Bristol City will be playing their first Championship fixture since 2013 after dominating League One and winning the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy last season. But it has been marred by Sheffield Wednesday’s new ticket prices.

The game is classed as a ‘Category B’ game and people from both set of fans have been outraged at the prices being charged. Ticket prices in the away end for an adult is £39, this price is the cheapest in the ground alongside Sheffield Wednesday’s famous Kop. The North stand and grandstand are £42, the most expensive is the South Stand which is a staggering £46.

In comparison to last season, a ‘Category A’ game was £32 in the South Stand, this season it has gone up to £52. There is obviously is good reasoning behind these ticket prices, many people are wanting Chansiri to spend high amounts of money on top players, he has to make it back somehow.

With Bristol City averaging 1300 fans away from home last season many of them and more will want to attend this game. The Robins have been allocated 1068 tickets, I don’t believe they will sell this out. Talks of boycotting from both sides is ripe and I believe it could work. Before these prices were announced, an attendance of 28k+ was expected and that could easily be slashed to below 20k.

I believe that if attendances stay between 15-20k each home game, Chansiri and other high up people will notice this and move many games to lower categories to get numbers high. When Wednesday get fans behind them, especially if it is 25k+ home fans they always seem to do a bit better. With low attendances will the players not be up for it as much? We will see.
