Derby close to completing deal for veteran Burnley defender

The Daily Mail have today reported that Derby are soon to complete the signing of 31 year-old defender Jason Shackell from Burnley in a deal believed to be worth around £3 million.

Derby boss Paul Clement is keen to add Shackell to his squad with the defender’s leadership qualities a real attraction for the Rams manager.

A towering centre-back standing at 6’4″, Shackell started his career with Norwich City and played over 130 games for the Canaries during his eight year stay at Carrow Road.

After leaving to join Wolves in 2008 for a £1 million fee, the no-nonsense defender struggled to hold down a first-team place and was loaned out to both Norwich and Doncaster Rovers.

In 2010 Shackell moved to Barnsley but spent just one season with the Tykes before moving to Derby for a fee of £750,000, but again only spent one season with his new club.

Burnley snapped up the defender in 2012 and has been an ever-present in their squad ever since, racking up over 125 appearances and playing all 38 games in the Premier League last season.
