Can Ginnelly save out-of-contract players?

As the weeks go by it looks increasingly likely that Josh Ginnelly will be leaving Shrewsbury Town, the youngster has not attended pre-season training at Shrewsbury and has already played as a trialist for Norwich City. Ginnelly has been offered two professional contracts but has declined both, CEO Matt Williams is confident that Town will receive compensation if the youngster from Coventry departs this summer. Even though it is likely that Ginnelly will not be in a Town shirt next year, there is a big positive from his departure.

Shrewsbury’s wage bill has limited Micky Mellon on who he can sign, Mellon has said publicly he will not risk this clubs financial situation by spending big on individuals. Town fans have already seen what happens when your wage bill is slashed due to relegation fees, fan favourite Andy Mangan dropped back into the Conference after a season that saw him score against Petr Cech and he rack up ten goals.

Akpa Akpro and Grandison find themselves out-of-contract but have not departed the club, both players have looked close to leaving in this summer period but nothing has materialised. I’ve wrote articles linking them to clubs and even said that Grandison was set to sign for Birmingham City. Unlike Ginnelly, Akpa Akpro and Grandison have attended pre-season and featured in games against Market Drayton and Cardiff City, Akpa Akpro got himself on the scoresheet against City.

But now Shrewsbury are almost assured a hefty price tag for Ginnelly, can they hold onto the two players? Sam Patterson from Barnsley has been on trial with Town and has been praised by Mellon due to impressive performances. Possibly Mellon could be anticipating the money that will be injected into the club when Ginnelly is sold, Akpa Akpro has showed no sign of wanting to leave the club and has settled well at the Greenhous Meadow and Grandison was rumoured to be looking at his options. Fans would love to see the two stay at the club, both are important cogs in the Shrewsbury machine that will be tested next season in League One against the likes of Millwall, Wigan and Blackpool.
