Cook Prays That Christian Can Surprise

Pompey manager Paul Cook has promised fans that new central defender Christian Burgess will be a key player for the club.

Burgess signed for the Blues on a three-year contract after falling out of favour at Peterborough United for whom he made 30 appearances last season. Cook snapped up the 23-year-old for an undisclosed fee to boost his defensive options. The defender also impressed in Portsmouth’s first pre-season friendly against Havant and Waterloovile.

Burgess, who made 41 appearances for Hartlepool United two seasons ago is being backed to rise to the pressure of his new side. Cook told the Portsmouth News:

“With Christian you can see the natural qualities in him. He can bring the ball out of defence, he can pass it, he has time in possession, but he can also defend. What we have got to make sure is we are working on other deficiencies within his game.”

Pompey take on Bognor Regis on Friday before travelling to Gosport Borough the following day.
