Winger Woolford on his way to Bramall Lane

According to The72 sources, Sheffield United are set to announce the signing of Martyn Woolford this week.

After being released by relegated Millwall this summer, it hasn’t taken the West Yorkshire lad long to find a new club as The72 understands the Blades have secured the winger’s signature. Martyn has previously played under the Blades current boss Nigel Adkins at Scunthorpe United and it seems the Liverpudlian rates the 29-year-old enough to bring him to S2.

Woolford played 38 times for the Lions and he contributed 2 goals and 2 assists for the cause but he unfortunately couldn’t help the Lions from getting relegated into Sky Bet League One. At the age of 29, Woolford is just hitting the peak age for footballers so if the deal back up North does come off he will be hoping that he will have one of his better seasons as if he starts on the wrong front it could be very hard to recapture the fans faith as shown in previous players at Bramall Lane.

Martyn started his career at Northern Counties East League side Glasshoughton Welfare. In 2004, the then 18-year-old was described as an emerging talent and a year later he got a trial with Doncaster Rovers Youth Team. After three seasons with Glasshoughton, Woolford signed for Frickley Athletic in 2005. For the Blues that campaign he made 40 appearances hitting the net 14 times in all competitions. A year later he had a trial with then League Two side Stockport County but wasn’t offered a contract with the Hatters. A year after signing for Frickley, the winger was off again to another Yorkshire side in York City. After a successful year with the Minstermen, he was offered a new two-year contract which took him as a York City player until the summer of 2009. Woolford again enjoyed another strong season at York he was again offered a new deal but this time York’s new contract was declined.

He was then off to Scunthorpe where he met Nigel Adkins. In just under two months for the Iron, Woolford appeared twice at Wembley. He was also named Man of the Match in the second game for him at the National Stadium. One and a half seasons passed at Scunthorpe and Woolford decided it was time to move on and he signed a three and a half-year contract for Bristol City. After playing 55 times in two years for the Robins, he transferred to Millwall on a two and a half-year deal and that brings us up until now in the 29 year olds career.

We understand that soon there will be Sheffield United to add to that list and he will hope to have more successful seasons but this time in a red and white shirt.

As well as Woolford signing, our source also tells us that a deal with a striker who the Blades have been linked with for most of this summer transfer window will put pen to paper this week. Although there was no name given to us.

Finally we were exclusively told that a trialist may take part in next weekends friendly against Non-League Ilkeston but again, no name was given to us.
