Latics agree terms with former Swansea City keeper

Oldham Athletic yesterday agreed terms with former Welsh under 21 international David Cornell.

Despite making his professional debut for Swansea in a league cup match against Scunthorpe United back in 2009, the keeper struggled to make an impact at the Liberty Stadium and made no subsequent appearances. Loans to Hereford, St Mirren and Portsmouth followed but Cornell found himself without a club having been released by the Swans in May 2015.

All the talk at Latics had been of an experienced number 2 coming in to lend a helping hand to the talented youngster Joel Coleman. However, Darren Kelly seems to have other ideas and has brought in Cornell as a direct competition to Coleman. This should be Cornell’s first opportunity to nail down a regular first team place and having impressed on trial, Latics fans will be excited to have two young keepers battling for the number one shirt.

With the first pre-season game taking place away at Chester FC today, Oldham’s squad is beginning to take place. A couple of defenders will be on the agenda now, with Gavin Gunning and Tom McNamee set to appear as trialists in the coming friendly games. Rookie manager Darren Kelly’s business in the transfer window seems to have been smart thus far and with the new North Stand being fitted with seats this week, there is an air of cautious optimism at Boundary Park.
