Player Profile: Preston North End’s Will Keane

This week, Preston announced the signing of Will Keane from Man United on a season-long loan deal.

He becomes the Lilywhites third signing of the summer and we at The 72 have decided to take an in-depth look at the 22-year old, to give you everything you need to know about the PNE loanee.

Basic Stats

Name: Will Keane

Age: 22

Position: Forward

POB: Stockport, England.

Previous Teams

He’s still at Man United – he’s only moved to Deepdale on loan – where he has currently only made one previous substitute appearance. He’s also had stints on loan at Wigan, QPR and Sheffield Wednesday.

During his time at the DW Stadium, he managed to make four appearances, two of those coming off the bench. He then made the move to QPR on a short-term basis in 2014, where he managed to feature ten times in what was a decent loan spell for the forward.

His most recent move was to Sheffield Wednesday last season. He played thirteen times during his spell at Hillsborough.

Even though he is a forward, his goalscoring record isn’t the best. In all of his 28 appearances, he has only managed to hit the back of the net three times. Those three goals came when he was plying his trade for Wednesday, where he arguably played the best football that has been seen from him yet.

As for the national team, he has yet to play for the senior side but he has featured for England’s Under-16, Under-17, Under-19, Under-20 and Under-21 sides.

Where can he play?

Keane is typically played up-front as a striker, which is where he seems to perform to his best. However, he has also been able to play as an attacking midfielder and can even be placed on one of the wings, although it isn’t his favoured position by any means.

The 22-year old appears to play his best football when he is played as an out-and-out striker, either with a partner next to him or on his own: As long as he can get into that penalty box, then he will be fine.

He manages to get himself into some dangerous positions when he is on the field and spends a lot of time inside the opposition’s penalty box, as shown by his shots inside the area stats from last year – he managed 57 shots in the box in 13 games last season.

He’s also most dangerous at the end of each half – he had more shots at these points than at any other point during the games he featured in.

As for his other strengths, he has a good passing ability and because of his height, he is also a considerable threat from set-pieces.
