Southend battling for Irish striker along with MLS side Chicago Fire

Southend United, alongside Chicago Fire of the MLS, are battling to capture the signing of 32-year old Noel Hunt, according to the Irish Sun.

Hunt has recently been released by Ipswich Town and could make the same switch ex-Tractor Boy Anthony Wordsworth made last week to Southend.

The former Republic of Ireland national scored four goals last season for Ipswich, following his release from Leeds United in January.

Hunt didn’t have the best of times at Elland Road where he failed to score, but his best spell came when he was with Reading.

He has many Premier League appearances under his belt scoring 33 times in the league for the Royals after they bought him for £600,000 off Dundee United in 2008.

The striker has also played for Shamrock Rovers, Waterford United and Dunfermline United.
