Sheffield Wednesday complete move for prolific Portuguese attacker

Sheffield Wednesday have announced the signing of Marco Matias on a four year contract for a fee believed to be in the region of around £2.2 million.

The 26 year-old winger enjoyed an incredible season with Portugal Primeira Liga side Nacional last campaign as he netted 20 goals in all competitions bringing the club within one point of securing European football.

Wednesday had to fight off competition from Turkish giants Besiktas and Spanish side Malaga for the signature of the former Portugal U21 international.

Matias started his career with renowned Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon, the club who produced Cristiano Ronaldo, and spent nine years with the Lions before moving on to find more regular first team action.

Loans to lower league sides Varzim, Fatima, Real Massama and Freamunde preceded a move to top flight team Vitoria Guimaraes.

After impressing for their B team in the Segunda Division Matias was promoted to the senior squad in 2013 and impressed with his performances, leading to a move to Nacional.
