Wigan bid for striker rejected

Wigan Athletic have had a bid for Brentford striker Will Grigg rejected, believed to be in the region of £700,000.

Brentford believe Grigg is worth more than this price, and it is believed Wigan are set to make a higher offer to Brentford in the coming days, so they do not miss out on the Northern Irish forward.

Wigan confirmed the signing of free agent Craig Davies yesterday after his contract at Bolton expired but missed out on Nadir Ciftci, who instead joined Celtic.  It is thought that Wigan boss Gary Caldwell is also interested in Matt Derbyshire and Billy Sharp, but approaches are yet to be made.

Grigg spent last season on loan at MK Dons in League 1, scoring 20 times in 44 appearances for the club that were ultimately promoted.  Brentford don’t see Grigg as fitting their plans for next season so are happy to let him go back to League 1, but only for the right price.

If he were sold, former club Walsall would receive 25% of the transfer fee so this could explain why Brentford are waiting for a higher offer from Wigan.
