Loyalty Pays Off For New Skipper

Portsmouth manager Paul Cook has announced Paul Robinson as his club captain for next season after he pledged his future to the club.

Cook was impressed by Robinson’s commitment as he revealed the 33-year-old turned down offers from higher leagues to play for the South Coast side.

Former club captain and fan favourite Johnny Ertl is currently in negotiations to terminate his contract but encapsulated the community spirit of the fan-owned team.

Robinson however has been handed the captaincy following an impressive season in which he was runner-up in the player-of-the-season award and won numerous plaudits for his defensive displays. Cook told the Portsmouth News:

“There was strong interest from another club in our league, they offered Robbo a good deal. He came to see me, we had a good chat and he wanted to give Portsmouth his best shot.”

Cook was also impressed with the centre-back’s experience. Robinson, who signed an 18-month contract with Pompey in January, was also captain at League One Millwall making 311 appearances over fourteen years. Cook is hoping to lead Portsmouth to promotion and insisted his new captain’s experience is vital, saying:

“At the back you have the likes of Whatmough, Webster and Burgess, who are young lads. Can you get a better role model than Robbo? I don’t think you can.”

Portsmouth are still looking to complete their defensive line-up for next season, with a recognised right-back one of Cook’s main targets for the rest of the summer transfer window.
