Northampton boss confirms Newcastle interest in striker

Northampton Town manager Chris Wilder has confirmed that Newcastle United have held initial talks with the club over striker Ivan Toney.

Wilder was speaking following his sides 1-0 friendly win over local side Sileby Rangers, after much speculation about the Premier League side registering a bid believed to be worth around £300,000.

The 19-year-old almost left Northampton last season, with a fee being agreed with Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers, and the only reason the move didn’t come of was the fact that Toney failed a medical with the Championship club.

Toney was at the game played on Sunday afternoon, but did not make an appearance. Wilder is set to hold talks with Northampton chairman David Cardoza over the next couple of days to see if the striker will be part of the club’s pre-season programme in Brighton next week.

Speaking to the Chronicle and Echo, Wilder said “There has been discussions, we can’t get away from that, and as I have said before, Ivan is a very, very good young player that will attract interest.

“He is coming down the road with us to Brighton, I will know more where we are after I have had discussions with the chairman today and tomorrow.

“If it is kicked on, then we’ll wait and see, and if it isn’t then Ivan will be involved on Tuesday night in the game (at Worthing).”
