Rotherham United have just announced they have signed young defender Tom Thorpe after leaving Manchester United – a club where he had been for six years.

The highly rated youngster made his senior debut for the Red Devils last season in the Premier League in a game against West Ham following United’s defensive injury crises.

Prior to this, Thorpe enjoyed a loan spell at Championship outfit Birmingham City after impressing for United’s U21 team and being an integral part of the back line which had the best defensive record in the Premier League Reserve League.

Capped at several different international levels, the 22 year-old has represented England at U16, U17, U18, U19, U20 and most recently was part of the U21 squad in 2013.

While with the U17 set up, Thorpe played a role in the England side that won the UEFA European U17 Championship in 2010 – a side which included the likes of Saido Berahino, Benik Afobe and Connor Wickham.
