Championship new boys bring in Mainz man

QPR have completed the signing of Sebastian Polter of FSV Mainz 05 for a fee of £1m.

The powerful forward spent the last season on loan to Union Berlin, where he bagged 14 goals in 29 games.

Standing at 6’4, Polter is an imposing forward and as of last year, has added a goalscoring edge to his game. At just 24, it seems Polter is improving and could prove a bargain at £1m.

This signing could suggest a change in policy from QPR, a side who are famous for signing aging Premier League talent at a premium, whereas Polter could show the club that talent from elsewhere is cheaper, should he prove a good signing.

The German forward had never really shone at Mainz, other than one moment where he went in goal, and memorably made a terrific save from a free kick.

The signing of Polter seems to open the door for the departure of Charlie Austin, who has consistently been linked with several Premier League clubs, and his exit seems inevitable. Having said that, the striker seems to be more a natural replacement for Bobby Zamora, given his frame, so it would not be a surprise to see the London side move for another forward in the near future.
