Captain Kelly says he’s staying

Oldham Athletic captain Liam Kelly looks set to stay at Boundary Park after dismissing rumours suggesting otherwise.

The midfielder had been linked with a move to Barnsley in order to link up with former manager and friend Lee Johnson. However the Manchester Evening News reported yesterday (July 1st) that Kelly was unaware of such rumours and has his sights firmly set on another year with the Latics.

Signed from Bristol City last summer in a deal which saw Korey Smith head south-west to Ashton Gate, Kelly was a crucial cog in the Latics team which was challenging in and around the play-off spots for much of the first half of the season.  This point was highlighted when Kelly hit the treatment table and Oldham’s form plummeted. His return to the pitch was meant to spark a return in form for the Lancashire outfit however Kelly never hit the high standards he’d set previously, and neither did Oldham. Suggestions were rife that this had a little more to do with Johnson’s departure as manager than pure coincidence but Kelly will hope that those rumours can now be put to bed.

Naturally Latics fans won’t be convinced by this until the transfer window closes but it offers further weight to hopes that the skipper will remain at Boundary Park for another season at least. If he can regain his pre-Christmas form of last year, this could well be the best piece of business Oldham will do this summer.
