Leeds United lose out in the race for Icelandic ace as he heads to Italy

Football Italia last night reported that Pescara’s central midfielder Birkir Bjarnason, a much talked about target for Leeds United, has agreed a £700,000 move to Serie A side Torino.

The Icelandic international was also a target for fellow Serie A sides Carpi, Palermo and Empoli before Torino won the race, with the players medical expected to go ahead on Monday.

Bjaranason’s club Pescara had enjoyed an impressive season in the Serie B finishing as the leagues top scorers – but despite this they only made the playoff by two points and finished a staggering 19 points behind champions Carpi.

Sadly for the Italian side these goals dried up in the play-off final where, against Bologna, they only managed a 0-0 away and drew 1-1 at home – meaning Bologna won promotion via the away goals rule.

This failed promotion bid was always going to lead to clubs cherry picking their top talents and Bjarnason seems to be the first out the door.

An in depth article on the player was written by our main Leeds writer Graham Smeaton, this can be read here, with the main stats being the 27 year-old managed to score 12 goals this season along with three assists from midfield.

For the low fee of £700,000 for a 36-cap international, Leeds fans may feel this was a player that got away from them.
