5 Bolton Wanderers players that need to perform next season

If Bolton Wanderers are to compete next season and challenge for promotion, then they will require their most influential players to consistently perform when it matters.

  1. Zach Clough

The young youth product proved last season that he has what it takes to be very effective at this level, with 5 goals in just 8 league outings. His pace and trickery make him a nightmare for opposing defences, however the 20 year old could go missing in games and become a passenger at times, especially away from home, Clough will need to address this aspect of his game if he is to thrive and push on next year.

2.  Mark Davies

All Bolton fans would agree that Mark Davies is a very talented individual, capable of terrorising Championship defences with his creativity and class, and that he could certainly play at a higher level. However, almost all Bolton fans would also agree that he is far too injury prone and that a fully fit Mark Davies is an invaluable asset to any Championship team. Keeping Davies fit and playing regularly will feel like a new signing for Bolton.

3.  Eidur Gudjohnsen

Yes, he is a veteran at 36 years of age and he doesn’t have the pace or acceleration he once had, but he is still a fantastic player and adds vital experience to the Bolton squad. The Icelandic international’s CV speaks for itself and if Bolton can get another striker in to play off Gudjohnsen, they could form a deadly partnership. Gudjohnsen will look to push on from his 6 goals in 14 starts last campaign.

4.  Darren Pratley

An ineffective figure under Dougie Freedman, Pratley has gone from strength to strength under new boss Neil Lennon but has fallen victim to injury on several occasions during his time at the Macron Stadium. Pratley has become a real presence in the centre of the park in the games he has played and could spearhead an assault on the top 6 if kept fit.

5.  Tim Ream

The ever reliable American international has become a fan favourite for producing consistently solid performances in a somewhat shaky backline. Ream’s versatility to play at either centre back or left back makes him a useful squad member. His contribution to Bolton has been recognised by consecutive Player of the Year awards for the 2013/14 and 2014/15 seasons respectively. Ream will not to be at his brilliant best yet again for the upcoming campaign if Bolton want to challenge.
