West Brom agree fee for Wigan’s pacey International star

After much speculation over his future at the DW Stadium, with a switch to America to play in the MLS heavily touted, West Brom have agreed a deal to bring James McClean to the West Midlands for a fee of £1.5 million with confirmation of the transfer expected on Monday.

Following the Latics relegation to League One last season keeping hold of their prized assets was always going to be a tough task – and McClean is the first big name out of the door.

McClean finished last season as their top scorer with six goals in the Championship and was named as Wigan’s Player of the Year for his efforts in a forgettable season for the Latics.

After breaking through with Sunderland in the Premier League back in 2011-12, when he managed to net nine goals in 23 games in his first season in England’s top flight, McClean fell out of favour with the Black Cats and moved to Wigan in 2013.

Struggling to find his goal scoring form in the 2013-14 season was put right last term as, along with his goals in the Championship, he managed to score four goals in seven internationals for the Republic of Ireland.
