Southampton considering move for Fulham’s World Cup Runner-up

Premier League high-flyers Southampton are interested in signing Fulham’s Maarten Stekelenburg with the Dutch keeper still out of first-team contention at Craven Cottage.

The 32 year-old stopper spent last season on loan at French side Monaco but found first-team action hard to come by but still has two years remaining on his contract with the Cottagers.

Southampton have recently offloaded Artur Boruc to Bournemouth and first choice Fraser Forster is set to miss the first half of the season due to injury, prompting Saints boss Ronald Koeman to search for a keeper.

Stekelenburg joined Fulham back in 2013 but has only made 19 appearances since his arrival from Italy. The keeper joined Italian giants Roma from Ajax where he had spent 14 years and played close to 200 games.

Winning the Eredivisie in both 2003-04 and 2010-11, Stekelenburg was also between the sticks during four triumphs in the Johan Cruyff Shield, and is a three-time winner of the KNVB Cup.

The 6″5′ stopper had played over 50 games internationally for Holland before his retirement in 2012 and he was the keeper during the their Runner-up World Cup performance in 2010.
