Wigan star set for MLS switch following Latics relegation

After their relegation to League 1, Wigan face a struggle to hold on to their star players with James McClean the latest player to be linked with a move away.

The Republic of Ireland international is worried that playing in England’s third tier would hamper his international career and put him out of favour with Ireland boss Martin O’Neil.

In terms of possible suitors from the MLS, New York Red Bulls have emerged as leading the race for the player, and have been touted as being willing to paying £1.2 million for the winger.

McClean would join a growing list of Football League players who have gone to join MLS sides, including Bradley Wright-Phillips, Kevin Doyle, and Shaun Maloney.

The 26 year-old attacker was bought by the Latics from Sunderland back in 2013 for a fee of around £2 million and McClean has gone on to score ten goals in 85 games for Wigan.

Formerly Sunderland’s Young Player of the Year, McClean shot to prominence during his first season with the Black Cats following a move from Derry City, as he scored nine goals in 23 Premier League appearances.
